On a Saturday in Nakusp

It is very beautiful and peaceful at Serenity Views, but venturing into the Village of Nakusp is also a great experience.  Here are some ideas for trip to town on a Saturday:

Nakusp Farmer's Market Sign

Each Saturday from May to October,  there is a Farmer’s Market, where you can find all sorts of crafts, jewellery, baking, plants, produce and even music. Down the road from the market, visit Home Grown Market and Juice Bar which features organic produce. There are several other interesting stores in Nakusp, mostly along the main street (Broadway), but taking the side streets will bring you to a chocolate shop, an art gallery, and other unique shops.

A trip to town must include a walk along the waterfront walkway where you can see all sorts of flowers in bloom. Grab a coffee from one of the coffee shops and enjoy the gorgeous views!  If you feel like taking a dip in the Arrow Lake, there is a beautiful sandy, public beach at the west end of the waterfront walkway.

The Nakusp Visitor Centre is also a great place to visit while in town, if you need maps and directions, and other ideas for activities!

Canada Day in Nakusp

Canadian flag at Serenity ViewsCanada Day in Nakusp was hot and sunny, bringing out many visitors and residents to celebrate.  There was a parade in the morning, followed by a Festival at the Park with a Farmers’ Market, food vendors, games for children and adults, music and a Car and Motorcycle Show and Shine Show. In the evening the Beer Gardens opened with a country band playing from the gazebo in the park.  The United Church served a delicious pig roast dinner.  Canada Day finished with fireworks on the waterfront.

Here are some pictures taken of the parade:

At the end of this busy day, it was wonderful to come home to the peace and quiet of Serenity Views!

Spring on the Waterfront Promenade

Tree in bloom on waterfront promenadeAfter a few days of rainy weather, Nakusp is now enjoying warm, sunny weather.  The hummingbirds have returned and flowers and trees are beginning to blossom.  One of the favorite activities of visitors and residents of Nakusp is to walk along the waterfront promenade – a one kilometre pathway stretching along the shoreline of the Upper Arrow Lake.  This paved pathway is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy nature.  There are trees, benches, several flower gardens, a recently installed stone sculpture, and even a peaceful Japanese garden to visit.

This walk may take a little longer than you plan for because the residents of Nakusp are friendly and enjoy visiting with everyone. A walk along the promenade is a “must-do” activity if you come to Serenity Views!

As well, the Mirror Theatre group of Nakusp is hosting the 2013 Theatre BC Kootenay Zone Festival on the weekend of May 9-12.  There will be three different productions in the Bonnington Fine Arts Centre, located in the Nakusp Elementary School.  “Bonnie and Clyde” will be performed by the Nakusp Secondary School drama class on Thursday May 9th, and the Revelstoke Theatre Company will be performing “Fuel” on Saturday, May 11th.  Our local theatre group will be performing a Broadway musical, “The Fantasticks”, on Friday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m. as well as a couple of performances the following weekend.  If you are going to be in Nakusp, this would be a great event to attend!

A walk along the waterfront

We have had a very wet spring, but it appears that the sun is finally beginning to shine!  A walk along the waterfront promenade in the Village of Nakusp can lift anyone’s spirits.  Views of the lake and the surrounding mountains cannot be beat.  As well, the well-kept lawns, bushes and flowers along the promenade make it a pleasure to go for a walk.  There are numerous benches along the 1 kilometre walk where you can sit and enjoy the view, while finishing off a coffee from one of the unique coffee shops in Nakusp.

Do not be surprised if everyone you meet says “hello”.  Nakusp is a very friendly Village, and residents walking along the waterfront will often stop and chat with you.

Is spring finally here??

It appears that spring has arrived in Nakusp!  The snow is gone and the trees and bushes are starting to bud out.  It is wonderful hearing many different birds chirp in the forest.  The ospreys have returned and are often seen gliding over the lake, and many different types of waterfowl have been spotted in the lake.

The flowers in the picture below are growing in Spicer’s Garden, which is located on the waterfront promenade in Nakusp.  The promenade provides great views of the lake and mountains, benches to relax on, and many plants and flowers growing from one end of the walkway to the other.  If you would like to experience the beauty of Nakusp, we invite you to stay at Serenity Views, and visit the many attractions in the area, including the waterfront promenade!

Season’s Greetings from Serenity Views

Icicle formation on stump on shoreline of Arrow LakeWell, it seems like we will get our white Christmas!  As I write this, big beautiful snowflakes are falling.  Although we receive a fair amount of snow in our area, the temperatures usually remain around 0 degrees which makes it very comfortable for being outside.

As the snow accumulates, cross country skiiers and snowshoers are looking forward to getting out and enjoying the many trails in the area of Nakusp.

After an invigorating day of exercise, it is always great to travel up to the Nakusp Hot Springs and enjoy a soak in the healing waters.  Winter hours for the Nakusp Hot Springs are from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m.

So much to do in town!!

Nakusp has had great weather lately and the gardens on the waterfront promenade are gorgeous.  Going for a walk on the promenade is a “must-do” if you are visiting Nakusp.

As well, the summertime activities that make Nakusp so special are underway.  Every Wednesday evening during the summer there is live music performed in the park across from the public beach.  “Music in the Park” is a great family activity, with many locals and tourists attending to listen to the music and watch children dancing on the grass in time to the music.

Fresh Veggies at the Nakusp Farmers' MarketBuying fresh produce at the Farmers’ Market is another popular activity.  Each Saturday morning in the street beside the coffee shop, there are tables set up with produce, baking, jams, crafts, jewellery and other goodies for sale.
