Happy New Year from Serenity Views!

Snowfall at Serenity Views
Happy New Year to our guests!  We are looking forward to another great year and hope to see some of our past guests, as well as new ones in 2015.  We feel so fortunate to be able to live in this beautiful area, and love to share it with others.

The year has started off with lots of snow!  Between January 4 and 6th, it snowed constantly – big, fluffy flakes – which left a total of about 2 feet or more on the ground.  Luckily, the temperature never dropped below -5 C, so it was quite comfortable as we shovelled outside!!

Check out these pictures from the big snowfall.

The local ski hill at Summit Lake is in full operation, and snowshoers and cross-country skiers are happy to see the snow. After a day of playing in the snow (or shovelling), it is always nice to go to the hot springs to warm up. Both Nakusp Hot Springs and Halcyon Hot Springs are open year-round.

We hope that 2015 brings you and your family a year of health and happiness.

Best wishes, Brian and Marilyn

“Do what you otter”

The forested property of Serenity Views is home to many types of wildlife and birds.  As well, we are fortunate to be located on the Arrow Lake which provides many opportunities for wildlife viewing.

While relaxing on the lakeshore recently, some of our guests observed an otter playing in the water.  In addition, there were loons quietly floating in the clear waters of the lake.

Our thanks to Dave and Lisa for sharing these incredible photos with us!

Canada Day in Nakusp

Canadian flag at Serenity ViewsCanada Day in Nakusp was hot and sunny, bringing out many visitors and residents to celebrate.  There was a parade in the morning, followed by a Festival at the Park with a Farmers’ Market, food vendors, games for children and adults, music and a Car and Motorcycle Show and Shine Show. In the evening the Beer Gardens opened with a country band playing from the gazebo in the park.  The United Church served a delicious pig roast dinner.  Canada Day finished with fireworks on the waterfront.

Here are some pictures taken of the parade:

At the end of this busy day, it was wonderful to come home to the peace and quiet of Serenity Views!

Spring on the Waterfront Promenade

Tree in bloom on waterfront promenadeAfter a few days of rainy weather, Nakusp is now enjoying warm, sunny weather.  The hummingbirds have returned and flowers and trees are beginning to blossom.  One of the favorite activities of visitors and residents of Nakusp is to walk along the waterfront promenade – a one kilometre pathway stretching along the shoreline of the Upper Arrow Lake.  This paved pathway is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy nature.  There are trees, benches, several flower gardens, a recently installed stone sculpture, and even a peaceful Japanese garden to visit.

This walk may take a little longer than you plan for because the residents of Nakusp are friendly and enjoy visiting with everyone. A walk along the promenade is a “must-do” activity if you come to Serenity Views!

Good-bye Winter, Hello Spring!

After a winter with cooler temperatures than usual, we are excited about the signs of spring seen on the property of Serenity Views!  There is quite a lot of bird activity in the trees these days with sightings of Varied Thrush, Robins and Flickers. Bald Eagle at Serenity ViewsThis bald eagle was seen recently sitting on a perfect perch overlooking the lake.  We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the hummingbirds and ospreys!

Staying at Serenity Views gives our guests the opportunity to observe nature in many ways.  Whether you choose to hike along the shoreline of the lake, or on one of the many trails in the area, or just sit and relax on the deck of the Studio Suite or the Camping Cabin, you will enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.

Using a canoe or kayak to cruise along the shoreline of the Arrow Lake is another great way to enjoy nature.  Bring your own, or rent one of our watercraft.

Our hope is that our guests have a relaxed, enjoyable holiday, and make the most of their time at Serenity Views and the beautiful Village of Nakusp.

Nakusp Summer Events

It is so peaceful and quiet at Serenity Views that it is hard to leave sometimes.  However, a trip into the Village of Nakusp is just a 5 minute drive away, and is worth the effort.  Below are some of the activities happening this summer.

Vendor at Nakusp Farmers' MarketFarmers’ Market – Each Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., there is a gathering of artists, bakers, jam makers, farmers and jewellery makers who set up their tables and spread out their wares.  As well as being able to buy fresh fruits and veggies, there are many unique items on display.  Be sure to visit the Farmers’ Market if you are in Nakusp on a Saturday morning!

Music in the Park at NakuspMusic in the Park – On Wednesday evenings, there is live music at the gazebo in the park across from the public beach in town.  This is a free event running from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.  Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy the music in a beautiful location!

Kuskanax Creek Foot Bridge Grand Opening CelebrationGrand Opening of the Kuskanax Creek Foot Bridge – On Saturday, August 17th, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., there will be a celebration at the Nakusp Hot Springs.  The new bridge across the Kuskanax is finally finished and open to visitors!!  The grand opening includes two bands playing in various locations, as well as food vendors and a beer tent.  There will be free shuttle buses running during this time from the Nakusp Arena, as parking will be at a minimum.

If you are unable to attend the grand opening events, be sure to visit the bridge when you come to Nakusp.  It is just a short walk from the Nakusp Hot Springs parking lot, and leads to a trail going to the source of the hot springs.

These are just a few of the summer activities in Nakusp that we hope our guests will take advantage of!

Flooding in Alberta

We have been watching with concern the recent major flooding in Alberta.  Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this disaster, and hope that life will return to a normal state soon.

Because of the flooding in Alberta, we have had several inquiries from our guests concerning the conditions in our area.  The Nakusp area has had lots of rain in the last few weeks, but there have been no flooding concerns.

Serenity Views was built on the hillside overlooking Upper Arrow Lake.  The level of the Arrow Lake is controlled by a dam at each end – the Revelstoke Dam on the north and the Keenleyside Dam near Castlegar on the south end of the Arrow Lake.  The level of the lake does fluctuate, but residents are aware of the changes and are prepared for these changes.  Any buildings must be built 100 feet above the high water line, so our lodgings are never in danger of flooding.

Deer on roadway When travelling to the Nakusp area, you should be aware of the road conditions along whatever route you choose to take.  The Drive BC website is great and covers the whole province.  It includes ferry information as well, which is essential to check when travelling to Nakusp.

As well as road and weather conditions, we urge our guests to be aware of wildlife.  Deer are quite often seen along the highways leading to Nakusp, so please be watchful and cautious.

We wish all our guests a safe journey to Serenity Views!

Do you enjoy fishing?

Staying at Serenity Views has many benefits.  As well as the quietness of the property and the great views of the lake and mountains, there is the advantage of being able to enjoy the shoreline on the edge of the beautiful Upper Arrow Lake.

If you enjoy fishing from shore, this is the place for you!  Whether you are staying in the Camping Cabin or the Studio Suite, the shoreline is just a short walk down a forested pathway where you can fish on the secluded rock beach.

Below is a picture of a Dolly Varden which was caught by recent guests who were staying in the Camping Cabin.  Thank you Sherry and Lenard for sharing your picture with us!

There are numerous species of fish in the Arrow Lake including rainbow trout, bull trout, kokanee and whitefish.  Trout usually range from 2-7 kg. but have been known to reach 12 kg.  Note to all fisherman:  this fish was released back into the lake!

Theatre in Nakusp

There are many signs of spring in Nakusp these days – the grass is green, flowers are popping up everywhere, and the golfers are once again enjoying the beautiful Nakusp golf course!

Spring flowers

As well, the Mirror Theatre group of Nakusp is hosting the 2013 Theatre BC Kootenay Zone Festival on the weekend of May 9-12.  There will be three different productions in the Bonnington Fine Arts Centre, located in the Nakusp Elementary School.  “Bonnie and Clyde” will be performed by the Nakusp Secondary School drama class on Thursday May 9th, and the Revelstoke Theatre Company will be performing “Fuel” on Saturday, May 11th.  Our local theatre group will be performing a Broadway musical, “The Fantasticks”, on Friday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m. as well as a couple of performances the following weekend.  If you are going to be in Nakusp, this would be a great event to attend!
